Web 2.0

I thought I hadn't done a blog post about web 2.0 throughout my time researching thoughts and ideas so here we go...

What is Web 2.0?

Web 2.0 refers to second generation of web-based communities. This includes social networking sites (like facebook and twitter), blogs and collaboration sites. Web 2.0 provides the opportunity for the reader and creator to interact and more importantly, for reader to become the creator. (Module 1 handbook)

It's crazy to think our how whole society revolves around web 2.0 applications in pretty much everyday life.

Web 2.0 for me is very much active in my practice. As it allows me to keep up to date with everything and lets me be involved in communities/groups.

Web 2.0 allows us to:

interact with each other and make connections. - Just like we do here on this course and through our blogs interacting and challenging our thoughts and ideas to each other.

promote ourselves and our talent through social mediaHaving your accounts open and public means accessibility to choreographers, agents, directors. In addition it is also an outlet where we can put our Headshots and showreels for industry people to see. Your content can get shared with others will lead more people within the industry to come across your social platform.

learning and teaching - Throughout the pandemic dance studios/dance colleges had to shut which meant a lot of teachers were out of work, however in lockdown a lot of teachers really made use of the time by having online classes this meant that students/graduates could still take part in classes.

Web 2.0 has changed even more so for our industry post covid...

One thing I have found has been different since covid is that open auditions seem to no longer be a thing at this point, every audition you know have to apply for whereas before you could just attend... seems like you have to book your slot or email casting with CV, headshot and showreel. Is this lessening even more people's chance to get a job.

How has your professional field engaged with web 2.0?

Especially since post covid my professional field of dance has engaged well with web 2.0. Being able to post freely any dance content and spread positivity and light in the hardest time. Also to be involved in groups on these platforms with people who share the same passion as you, sharing auditions/work opportunities.

Web 2.0 has got its negatives too... my friends recommend me to watch this documentary and I'm not going to lie I have been putting this off for the longest time but I have finally watched it. I had pre convinced notions about the documentary as I knew what these creators and developers had to say was the truth.

'The Social Dilemma'

These are the main points I heard many of the creators/experts say:

'Mental Health and social media use'

'They are competing for you attention'

'Business model is to keep you on the screen'

'How much of your life can we get you to give to us'

'Every single action is being watched, tracked and measured'

'Social media is a drug'

Turning off notifications - I haven't done as of yet but I know people that have and said how much better it is not seeing notifications on their screens constantly.

The developers/creators kids don't have social media as they know how much of a negative impact it can have on the younger generations

All devices out of bedroom at a fixed time

No social media til high school (16Yrs)

Work out a time budget with your kids

Isn't it funny how social media was intended to be a fun, social, online environment but all I took away from the documentary was a lot of negative and sad facts and how much of a money making scheme it truly is.

As much as I am on my phone constantly trying to be up to date with the news, friends and even in my industry I am so glad I watched it and I am so grateful for the moments I do have away from my phone for example work, dance classes, theatre performances, bath time. Who knows where web 2.0 will go next..

I have so many questions about this lens in general...

  1. Hi Portia,

Interesting read on the affects of social media. I'm someone who has definitely gone through a period of documenting everything i did professionally and personally on social media in my early twenties to then hardly using it at all. One of the reasons for that change was that I ended up having to do some social media things for work, and it made me hate the platform and not want to engage with it. I feel I've now found a happy balance of posting something every now and again, I do feel much healthier for it!

    1. Hi Indiana,

I feel like I'm still trying to find ways to not document everything on my social media platforms. So hard and it's so addicting. It's a ongoing battle I find.. I'm not sure if its because I'm in the middle of generations. I had a childhood without it so I feel like my generation were the 'guinea pigs' as social media only really became a thing for my generations once I turned 11. In addition I always find that there is a sense of staying relevant and that if I'm not on it I'm not being kept in the loop.

I'm pleased that you have managed to find a medium... I'm hoping I will grow out of social media eventually.
